The One That Mattered

“I love you very much”,
he would say to complete
contact with every woman
towards the end. A kindness,

both for him and the other.
Sometimes, most times
in the moment it was true.

And, the easy thing to do.
As his caregiver I held the secret
of this promiscuous proclamation close.

Constantly amazed
to see what a woman will do
when she believes
she is the one that mattered.

It becomes increasingly harder to tell the truth, I find, as time goes on -- about everything, but especially about love. "I love you" is what everyone wants to hear, but God knows what they make it mean, in their secret hearts: and God knows what I mean when I say it.

Lol this reminds me of my brother in law, when he was dying told each girl that they were his favourite. The secret came out in the end . but no one minded .

So well put in a gentle, lovely, honest poem.
